Editorial Design.

I'm going to outline exactly what I want from my editorial design so it is clear what my intentions are.

Hair- I want the hair to show texture, I will use plaiting, wax, hair spray and also a variety of string to help me with this.

Makeup- BOLD makeup. I want to use black against white and use terquoise to stripe across the forehead. I think using these three colours will be vibrant and bold. On the neck I want fullers earth covering her down to her chest and across her shoulders. This is also for texture.

Styling- I will have my model in a black blazer with gold and terquoise necklaces hanging around her neck. I want her to look sharp.

Editorial Model.

My model is changing AGAIN. Thankfully I have someone else to cover for me but this has become a massive inconvenience and I feel it has made me struggle with the design process of my editorial design. I hope that this isn't obvious in my final images and that they turn out just fine.

Here is an illustration that hopefully outlines what I was describing in my earlier post.

Catwalk Design.

So now that my catwalk design has now become my editorial, I'll explain what I would like for my new catwalk design. (hopefully my story board below illustrates it well)

Immaculate skin- no blemishes, fresh, warm, dewy skin.
Bright eyes, no mascara, very very natural.
Brushed up eyebrows, almost fluffy.
tuplast applied round jawline to give effect of scarification - fine detail, very subtle.

Long hair- almost wind swept.
Flat at the roots, textured at the ends.

Topless- front of body covered in lots of jewellery and beads. Very colourful, references asia.
back to have scarification shown using string and liquid latex.

Camel/sand coloured trousers or skirt- something natural to represent the earth.

I will create some face charts to help visualise and develop and post them shortly.

Editorial Makeup.

LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS IMAGE.
I love how disorientated this makeup makes her face look. The way her eyes are sunken and her forehead is raised. I am going to create my look a bit differently now and try and give the appearance of an unusual face shape.

Ideas for my models.

I've been looking at some images online and I have found a few different positions I think would be good to capture my designs. Something to show my models and give them some inspiration to work with.

Hair Inspiration- Editorial.

So for my editorial shoot I want the design to have different hair types involved. This image doesn't illustrate how I would like it, but it does show the different hair which can be created using extensions and other hair pieces as you can see there is different colour as well as type and texture. I really want a mix up in my editorial, something unusual and different.

Hair Inspiration- Catwalk.

Here are some images of inspirations and ideas I have for my hair design for my catwalk look.

I want it to have texture and length. I don't want the hair to appear smooth however I would like to have it flatter to the head and the ends appearing bigger as you can see more on the left image. I might even consider doing this with the hair up in a low pony tail, very sleek and smooth and the end very textured and 'wild'.

Model Dilema.

I've had troubles with both the models I was wanting to use. One of them I have lost contact with and I dont think he is willing to model anymore, and the other I dont think is suitable for the design I am looking for.
So there is a problem... I need more models. I do have a backup model I would use in an emergency but again I'm not sure he is perfect for the role now that I have started designing more and I think I want females. I managed to get a model suitable for my catwalk look yesterday and I am very happy with her appearance.

Model One:

Oh and while typing this I've got another model that would be happy to shoot for me.

Model Two:

The Switch Over.

I was thinking about my ideas for both catwalk and editorial. Looking back on my research I feel like the ideas I have created would be better suited if I swapped their purpose over. So now, my story board you see below for catwalk is now going to be used as editorial and the same for the editorial board, now going to be used for catwalk. I am going to gather some more research on hair ideas as I dont think I've fulled explained the design I am going for, then I will test them out and make sure they work.

Story Boards.

Okay so I've really got my head around my ideas for my final images and I know what I want to do. So here are my mood boards for both concepts, please leave comments if you have any ideas for me.

Catwalk Shoot.

I was in the studio today practising one of my looks. This was the design with fullers earth and you can see some images of my process on the hand and face.

This was the fullers earth applied on the hand and face. I wanted something to create texture however I need to see how well I could work with it in terms of durability and how long it would take. So far this seemed like a good idea as it didn't take long to dry when I used the cool setting on a hair dryer.

When it was dry i applied black aqua colour to the hand using a large sponge. I applied it by dabbing because i didn't want to rub off all of the fullers earth. However, when the black had dried and I applied the white with a brush, I asked the model to stretch her fingers and bend her wrist to create the cracking effect. If there was something I would change on the hand it would be where I applied the white aqua colour. I think it would look better just highlighting the knuckles.

This was the face with aqua colour applied to the fullers earth. I was working with this design for a while and trying different outcomes. I have decided that this design isn't fashion-based enough for my concept and I also dont think it would work for a catwalk. I liked the colour I used on the lips but I will not be smudging it down the chin.

However, this was what happened to the models face when I removed the fullers earth. Because it is a pure product and can be quite harsh to the skin, the models skin went red and she described it feeling like sunburn. This redness went down after an hour or so but I will not be using product on the face when I do my catwalk shoot.
I was advised that a face mask of a similar consistency wouldn't cause this redness however, I want to try my other design as I think it is going to be more appropriate. I am still going to keep the design on the hand as this has the desired texture I want and the fullers earth didn't affect the skin.

I want the hair for this design sleek and off of the face however it being textured and large from the back and you can see slightly in some of the image above. I will use crimpers and back combing to create this technique.

Face Charts Continued.

I have created a couple more face charts, starting to bring my design back to the fashion concept suitable for catwalk. Here are my designs:

(sorry about the bad quality images)

I feel these images are going to be more suitable for catwalk and I am going to see how they work on the face, I still want to create texture and I am going to try fullers earth.

Catwalk Face Charts.

While I was waiting for my dinner to cook I did two quick face charts to get me started and thinking about designs.

I think these designs need a lot of work however my thought process was to use fullers earth for the base of these designs to give them a thick texture. I will scrape into the fullers earth to create these shapes you see, finishing it off my using aqua colours in black and white.

Catwalk Shoot.

Okay so I feel as if I know which direction I would like to go towards for my Catwalk inspired shoot. I am enjoying the white on black and repetitive pattern designs so far. I have gathered some more research that is more specific for this idea. Please leave comments on your thoughts and any advice and ideas would be appreciated.

I love how the tribal concept and the black and white design has worked well on the nails. This is something I am going to have to think about when completing the overal look and I will practice designs on nails and see if I want to use them to bring my design together.

These two images I found on someones blog (http://thetribalway.blogspot.co.uk/2011/07/tribal-makeup-inspiration-sequel.html) I really like the subtle tribal influences from the image on the right and how this makeup artist has translated it into a more obvious tribal influence on the left. I also wanted to include these image because I think the black and white pigment works extremely well on dark skin. This is ideal for me because the model I am thinking about has this skin tone.

This is another image I came across just off google images. It is in fact the skeleton tribe (Chimbu) from Africa. I LOVE this. It intrigues me not only as to why but also because of the black and white design again. I found more images from this tribe.

These images and a lot of the sites found on the internet seem to be blogs of images and no solid facts about this tribe. I would like to find a book which told me more about their culture and way of life.

This image is amazing. The avant gaude design and slick back hair works well. I dont think it would be appropriate for a catwalk shoot but I will definitely take elements from it and work with it.

The British Museum.

On Wednesday I visited The British Museum. It was so interesting to see real items from many tribes across the world including Africa, Asia and America.

I have made a story board that shows the artefacts I found in the museum but I have also picked out the ones I think are of most interest to me and my ideas.

I choose this image because of the man to the left. I thought the snow on his moustache was brilliant. Great texture and really shows the climate that they live in. As the information board says, the people of the North American Arctic rely on animals as part of their culture. They use them for transport, food and also clothing.

I was thinking I could use this inspiration for my final images, perhaps using materials such as feathers or something fluffy.

These next images are inspiration for a idea I have for my catwalk shoot. I love the white on black, the contrast and the intricate designs that stand out from a far.

I also included these two images above because I feel like they both might have the same initial inspiration but have been used in different ways.

I am going to start drawing from these images and start developing my ideas for the catwalk shoot. In the meantime keep looking for more ideas and points of inspiration for the editorial shoot.
