WILD KINGDOM

Tribal and Physical Transformation...

Second year, first brief.

My initial thoughts drove me straight to Aboriginal tribes with their extravagant jewellery, stretched ears and bright primary colours that stand out on their strong dark skin.

We were shown two videos:

Kelis- Acapella

Empire of The Sun- We Are The People

Both of these videos highlight different aspects of tribes. These concepts are communicated through hair, makeup and styling but also the surroundings that the videos are set in.

I love the colours used in Kelis' video and the RICH PIGMENT that is bold and stands out more than anything, especially in the first shoot where everything is black and white except this amazing colourful necklace.

When I watched the second video by Empire of The Sun, I thought more about the deathly side of tribes, their evil heritage and way of life. The Skull makeup really appeals to me and it reminded me of an image I'd seen Tyra Banks post on Instagram by Ryan Olde.

This is something I would consider recreating myself. The half a face concept is very clever... it almost communicates two sides to one person and would be a really clever way of showing different tribal traditions.

Rodarte, A Collection Inspired by Death Valley and Vultures, Go Goth Tribal Warrior for Spring 2010

This collection really captures the feel for the more deathly side of tribes with the use of deep reds and blacks but also the textures of the materials they use. I find it interesting how their makeup is almost flat and cold like until you get these dark lips with a black tattoo effect that lifts the whole face instantly.

The matted hair emphasises the real texture of what their hair is like, the torn wool that is layered onto it brings more texture to the hair and fits in well with the styling of all of the models. I think the entire look is highly effective and very memorable.
